Tahir Zaman Priyo: A Voice for Justice Through the Lens
Tahir Zaman Priyo, a passionate cinematographer and video journalist, was tragically killed on July 19 during a student protest in Dhaka, demanding quota reforms in government jobs. A graduate of Pathshala South Asian Media Institute, Priyo was widely recognized for his role as the second-unit cinematographer on the acclaimed Bengali short film A Letter to God, directed by Hemanta Sadeeq.
Beyond his professional work, Priyo was deeply committed to social justice, using his camera to document various movements across Bangladesh, including his vocal advocacy for the rights of the Hill Tracts people. His powerful images and videos captured the essence of these struggles, making him a respected figure in the fight for human rights.
UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay condemned his killing, emphasizing the importance of protecting journalists like Priyo, who risk their lives to inform the public. Despite his untimely death, Priyo's legacy as a courageous storyteller and advocate for justice continues to inspire.
