Akil Simmons was born and raised in a small town in southern Illinois.
He graduated from Alton High School in 1995. He attended the University
of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Illinois State University and SIUE.
First exposure to filmmaking came when he observed the feature film
Die Akte Romero (1999) being shot in his hometown.
