Hellenistic Jewish philosopher. He hailed from Alexandria, Egypt, where he was a leading member of the Jewish community. A prolific author, his work brought together Greek philosophy and Jewish scripture, and greatly influenced subsequent Greek Christian theologians like St. Clement of Alexandria and Origen. Most of his works consist of commentaries on the Pentateuch, many of which survive in the original Greek. In c.40AD he headed a deputation to the mad Emperor Caligula to plead with him on behalf of Jews who refused to worship him, as he records in De Legatione.
