Robert Hughes emigrated to Australia with his family in 1929. He taught
himself to read music, learned orchestration from books, and later
gained experience while working as an orchestrator and arranger with
the Australian Broadcasting Commission in Melbourne. After World War II
he became music arranger/editor with the ABC and remained with them
until his retirement in 1976.
