Dorothy was born and grew up in Nottinghamshire as Caroline Dorothy Atkinson. She is known for London's Burning (1988), Mr. Turner - Meister des Lichts (2014) and Call the Midwife - Ruf des Lebens (2012). She first worked with Mike Leigh in Topsy-Turvy - Auf den Kopf gestellt (1999) where she met her husband, actor Martin Savage. They have one child. She has also worked extensively in theatre in the UK and on Broadway.
